Chocolate production that is fair to everyone requires a lot of effort and work. However, it is not always easy to identify a more responsible choice. So the confectionery manufacturer Panda put together four tips for making better chocolate choices. 1. Choose a palm oil-free optionSwitching to palm oil-free products is one of the most responsible actions a chocolate consumer or food industry professional can make. Palm oil production is associated with human rights and environmental problems. So chocolate made without palm oil is more ethical and consumes less of nature's limited resources.Panda's chocolate bars have been made without palm oil since 2016, and the confectionery manufacturer's entire chocolate production became completely palm oil-free in 2020, when the ingredient was also removed from the production of candies. 2. Prefer certifiedThe heart of chocolate, cocoa, is another critical ingredient in terms of responsibility. It cannot be replaced with current knowledge or skills. Therefore, the work of independent third parties to promote more responsible production in the countries of cocoa origin is particularly important.The cocoa purchased for Panda's chocolate is Rainforest Alliance certified. It means that practices are followed in the cultivation of cocoa, the aim of which is to protect forests, maintain biodiversity and support the well-being of employees.Certificate systems from independent third parties currently offer the best opportunity to do long-term work and bring about positive change locally.The certification markings can be found on the wrapper of the chocolate bar. 3. Domesticity and veganismCheck the place where the chocolate is made and the list of ingredients from the wrapper.Panda's entire confectionery production is located in Finland, and raw materials such as sugar are mainly domestic. For example, Panda's dark chocolate is plant-based, i.e. vegan. 4. Think about packagingOne perspective on the responsibility of a product as a product can be found in the packaging. The same goes for chocolate. The lighter the chocolate is packed, the less it burdens the environment. That's why the wrappers of Panda's chocolate bars have also been lightened over the years, and they do not contain aluminum at all.When only one type of material has been used in the packaging, it is easier to sort it correctly, so that recyclable materials can also be recycled. One hundred percent responsibly produced chocolate does not yet exist, and the chocolate industry has a lot of work to do in the area of responsibility. It is work that we at Panda are committed to. The target of their 30 years partnership has been to bring out the unique flavours of Madagascan cocoa and take care of the workers´ wellbeing and preserve the environment of the plantation. In Valrhona Manjari 64% you can taste the uniquely flavorsome and fruity Madagascan cocoa and fleshy notes of tangy red berries.
From the heart of Madagascar comes also the cocoa for Valrhona´s newest innovation, Valrhona Amatika 46% Vegan Chocolate. It is the first plant-based Grand Cru and brings an alternative to the world of milk chocolates. Valrhona Amatika 46% combines the sweetness and creaminess of almond with the aromatic potency of Madagascan cacao. The taste and texture are much like in milk chocolate and they meet the needs and creativity of pastry chefs and artisans the world over. Valrhona Amatika works in chocolate applications like regular milk chocolate. In terms of taste and texture, Valrhona has managed to get very close to classic milk chocolate. Instead of milk, almond powder is used in this vegan chocolate.
